A $325 to $625 pump-out every few years is the cheapest way to keep a $6,000 to $15,000 drainfield working.
The tank separates solids so that only liquid reaches the drainfield. When it is not emptied, solids leave it, enter the field and clog the soil for good. In Palm Beach County, where the wet season water table can rise to within a foot or so of the surface, a replacement field often has to be raised on imported sand, which is why the gap between maintenance and failure is so wide here.
